against death penalty; Hankyoreh with a good progressive cause
Hankyoreh has been lately having a series of articles on death penalty ("Death sentence for death sentence", Sahyôngje'e sahyông sôn'gorûl), and I'm lauding it for making such a strong stand for its abolition. It's a pity the parliamentary committee to which a bill for abolition has been submitted already last year has not been able to proceed in the matter, but now that the Department of Justice has taken up the issue, calling also for public debate, Hankyoreh is doing the right thing: • 1: "Mortgaged life of a model prisoner" • 2: Civilized nations already abolished • 3: Is death sentence impartial My earlier posts on the topic: • death penalty abolition plans this time in dept of justice (Feb 24, 2006) • Amnesty to target ROK in campaign against death penalty (Dec 21, 2005) • abolition of death penalty to parliament next month (Aug 30, 2005) • Yu Yeong-cheol sentenced to death (June 9, 2005) • abolition of death sentence in South Korea (Apr 8, 2005) • this is progress and human rights (law bill for abolition of death penalty) (Nov 22, 2004) • on outrageous views on death penalty by a KDLP politician (June 1, 2004) |
